A Global Endeavor to Communicate Fire Knowledge

About the Founder

Rexford Wilson FIREPRO Institute Ltd. was founded in 1986 by Rexford Wilson, who currently serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Wilson holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts. He served on the fire department in Amherst, Massachusetts.

He has held positions such as: NFPA Fire Record Editor; Executive Secretary, Fire Marshals Association of North America; Director, Fire Service Extension, College of Engineering, University of Maryland; Manager, Fire Product Development, Fenwal, Inc.; and President, FIREPRO Incorporated, the technical consulting center for fire engineering and physical asset defense, a corporation he founded.

In 1992 he repositioned FIREPRO Institute Ltd. as a worldwide educational organization devoted to improving the delivery of building firesafety knowledge among practitioners.

Author of numerous articles on fire and fire protection, he originated the NFPA's Multiple Death Study, and the NFPA Report on International Fire Data.

He has been a frequent contributor to the NFPA Handbook of Fire Protection, a member of several government commissions, and has patented a portable automatic fire extinguishing system used in large aircraft manufacture and nuclear facilities.

He has performed detailed fire analysis of many major fatal fires, including those at the Dupont Plaza Hotel, the MGM Grand Hotel, the Hartford Hospital, the Museum of Modern Art and the Chicago School. As a student of conflagrations, Mr. Wilson predicted and later reported on the massive fire in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles. He has served as an "expert witness" in court.

Mr. Wilson's lecture, teaching and consulting assignments have covered the U.S., Canada, Europe and the Near and Far East. He is a fellow of the SFPE, and has been awarded many prizes, including being the second recipient of the prestigious NFPA Standards Medal.

He is founder of the NFPA Committee on Fire Reporting, founder of the SFPE Committee on Measurement of Fire Phenomena, coined the "drop-roll" part of the phrase that became "Stop, Drop and Roll," founder of the LimitFireTM Method used in the Measurement of Building Firesafety, and co-founder of the L-Curve Method of evaluating the Fire Risk in a building.
